Half way done with my hours! Not that I'm going to stop volunteering after I'm done with my hours, I just don't want to blog about it. Anyways, today we were back at Dragonfly Creek and we are almost done with clearing out the area. Esmeralda, one of the Stewards, was leading a group by some big shady trees and planting irises. I helped that group for a little while, then came back with my El Camino group to finish more weeding. Someone found a salamander, and I found a snail. Pictures were taken and good times were had.

Blog#4 3/20/11

Total Time: 12 hrs
Battery East was on our agenda today. It is an area off of Lincoln blvd. that overlooks the Marina. The Park Stewards had previously planted native species here but that was about a year ago and the invasive plants have begun to take over. We weeded around the natives and made so much progress that we finished the entire area by the end of the three hours. Coty, my mentor (although his name is really Jonathan), taught me what Lupine is today and that the Mission Blue Butterfly depends on it for survival.

Today we returned to Dragonfly Creek. We made a lot of progress clearing out the ditch. It was hard work of loading the tarps up with weeds, then hauling them back up to the truck, but ti was worth it. We are more than half way done with the clearing, then we can begin planting.

This service, we worked on clearing weeds away from the native plants by the marina. The native plants we worked on preserving were monkey flower, coyote brush, and a type of Californian thistle that I am forgetting the name of at this moment. It had cotton-like fibers wrapped around spikes and a purple top to the flower.

First Blog 3/6

Total Time: 3 hours
Today was my first volunteer service with the Presidio Park Stewards. We were working in Dragonfly Creek by clearing out large amounts of overgrown weeds and fallen branches. It was interesting because when we finished clearing out the area, we will plant native strawberries and irises all over. The work area is next to a few tennis courts, and tennis balls have accumulated over time. Mark, Scott, Jason and I found at least fifty today! We found it difficult to focus on the task when mini tennis ball fights emerged in our group. So far, I am really enjoying my community service.
