Blog#20 5/15/11

I need to thank Jon (Coty) for filling out my mentor agreement forms and being such a great help. When I return next time, I need to figure out what to bring him as a gift. I also need to thank Scott Campit, Mark Malaya, and Jason Buenaflor for being great friends and amazing people to work with. I really enjoyed doing this type of community service for my senior project and I hope to do something similar in college.

Today we worked in Dragonfly Creek again. It is completely astounding to know what it looked like only a month ago, and that now it is totally transformed! The irises and strawberries are doing well, so we watered them. A few trees have been planted like a cherry blossom tree and I think a maple tree. Where there used to be weeds and overgrown, it is now a beautiful place with many native species to attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

We worked in Battery East today and worked on eradicating the rest of the weeds. The job was pretty successful because there was more people there today. Some were interns from SF State and others just felt like today to volunteer with their families. Either way, it's nice to see so many people interested.

I did not go to the volunteer service today because I had funeral services to attend to, but I plan on going tomorrow.

We worked more with native plants and I learned about five-fingered fern, spike bentgrass,one-leaf onion, Columbine, and coast rock cress. Coty and Charlie are really great for helping me out when I have questions. I made a mistake and ended up taking out some native plant on accident, until Mary saw and pointed it out. Oops..
