Today our ride situation didn't work out and it was too last minute to go volunteer. I did get to sleep in, which is always a plus! But next time we are trying to plan ahead.

Blog #13 4/24/11

Today we went back to the Marina and worked on the weeds next to a few trails and roads that were caused from people spreading seeds into the area. They could have been caused by birds who ate them, but Coty says it is most likely people who throw seeds out off the trail. This is pretty weird. Why would someone want to do that? Unless they thought they were helping I guess...

We worked at Dragonfly Creek again, and then found out that after it was "Picnic Day" and just a couple minutes away there was a huge amount of barbecue and people from all over the park who help out like us. It was really great to relax and eat after working in the dirt.

Today we went to the Marina and worked for a little bit. It's always pretty windy up there and I forgot a hair tie so my hair was everywhere. Other than that it was a pretty good day.

Today I couldn't go to the Presidio because I have a band commitment. Being in three jazz bands, an orchestra, a symphonic band, and choir have made scheduling things difficult for me because I never have a free moment, and if I do, it is usually spent thinking about what I have to do next.

I have been really enjoying myself with the community service. I like all the people I've been meeting and I haven't encountered a rude person at all. The work is nothing compared to the accomplishment I feel when I look at the area after we have finished. I can see myself doing something like this for a career.

Dragonfly Creek was fun today. I got to help build a new lookout point with Scott, Mark and Jason by digging out the dirt to make it flatter, pounding it down, then putting some tanbark over it. To make sure the rain doesn't wash it away, we made a retaining wall out of the tree branches we cleared out earlier.
Total time: 24 hrs

Today we went back up to Battery East to do some maintenance and upkeep because our group was fairly small today. There are a lot of joggers and bicyclists who stop and ask us what we are doing. I think they want to know to make sure we aren't just clearing out the native plants too, but its nice to talk with them either way.

Back at the Marina today. Jason couldn't make it because he is sick. We weeded along a hill where the dirt is really sandy so it is easy to slip and get a lot of dirt in your shoes. I met Mary today, she brings her home backed cookies and pastries for break time every volunteer day.
